چکیده

We present Chandra observations of two radio-quiet QSOs, PG 2302+029 and PG 1254+047. PG2302+029 has an ultra high-velocity UV absorption system (∼ −56, 000 km s), while PG 1254+047 is a Broad Absorption Line (BAL) QSO with detached troughs. Both objects are X-ray weak, consistent with the known correlation between αox and the strength of the UV absorption lines. The data suggest that there is evidence that both objects are intrinsically weak X-ray sources, in addition to being heavily X-ray absorbed. The X-ray absorption column densities are NH > 10 22 cm for neutral gas and the intrinsic emission spectra have αox > 2. The data are fit best by including ionized (rather than neutral) absorbers, with column densities N H > 2.98 × 10 cm and N H > 17.3 × 10 cm. The degrees of ionization are consistent with the UV lines, as are the total column densities if the strongest lines are saturated.

Discovery of Narrow X-Ray Absorption Lines from NGC 3783 with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer.

We present the first grating-resolution X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. These spectra reveal many narrow absorption lines from the H-like and He-like ions of O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Ar as well as Fe xvii-Fe xxi L-shell lines. We have also identified several weak emission lines, mainly...

FUSE Observations of Warm Absorbers in AGN

In a survey of the UV-brightest AGN using the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), we commonly find associated absorption in the O vi λλ1032, 1038 resonance doublet. Of 34 Type I AGN observed to date with z < 0.15, 16 show detectable O vi absorption. Most absorption systems show multiple components with intrinsic widths of ∼ 100 km s spread over a blue-shifted velocity range of < 1000...

High Velocity Outflows in Narrow Absorption Line Quasars

The current paradigm for the AGN phenomenon is a central engine that consists of an inflow of material accreting in the form of a disk onto a supermassive black hole. Observations in the UV and optical find high velocity ionized material outflowing from the black hole. We present results from Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations of a sample of intrinsic NAL quasars with high velocity outflows. Ou...

Discovery of Associated Absorption Lines in an X-ray Warm Absorber: HST Observations of PG1114+445

The unified picture of X-ray/UV absorbers offers an unique opportunity to probe the nuclear environment of AGNs. To test the unified absorber scenario and to understand the physical properties of the absorber we obtained the first UV spectrum of PG1114+445 using HST FOS. PG1114+445 is known to have an X-ray ionized (“warm”) absorber, so that UV absorption is predicted. The HST spectrum clearly ...
